Prayer
|
After this manner therefore pray ye:
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed
be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive
our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Matt 6:9-13

What is prayer? When Should you pray? How
should you pray? These questions were asked of Jesus by His disciples while
he was here amoung them. If they needed to ask the Lord how to pray, how
much more do we need to go to him for instruction on this subject. For
answers to these questions we shall trun to the Bible and the Sprit of
Prophecy.
The first question
we will deal with is; What is prayer? For the defination we will look to
the dictionary.
prayer1 (prâr) n. 1.a. A reverent
petition made to God, b.
The act of making a reverent petition
to God, 2. An act of
communion with God, such as in devotion,
confession,
praise, or thanksgiving 3. A specially
worded form used
to address God, 4. prayers. A religious
observance in
which praying predominates.
As can be seen form the definition of prayer,
it is communication with God. When you pray you are speaking with God.
NO
PLACE INAPPROPRIATE FOR PRAYER
"There is no time or place in which it
is inappropriate to offer up a petition to God.... In the crowds of the
street, in the midst of a business engagement, we may send up a petition
to God, and plead for divine guidance, as did Nehemiah when he made his
request before King Artaxerxes.
"We may speak with Jesus as we walk by
the way, and He says, I am at thy right hand. We may commune with God in
our hearts; we may walk in companionship with Christ. When engaged in our
daily labor, we may breathe out our heart's desire, inaudible to any human
ear; but that word cannot die away into silence, nor can it be lost. Nothing
can drown the soul's desire. It rises above the din of the street, above
the noise of machinery. It is God to whom we are speaking, and our prayer
is heard.
"It is not always necessary to bow upon
your knees in order to pray. Cultivate the habit of talking with the Saviour
when you are alone, when you are walking, and when you are busy with your
daily labor."

1Thes 5:17

unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;
Luke 18:1
"We must pray constantly, with a humble
mind and a meek and lowly spirit. We need not wait for an opportunity to
kneel before God. We can pray and talk with the Lord wherever we may be."

Evening, and morning, and at noon,
will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.

ARMOUR
OF GOD
Eph 6:10-18
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the
Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that
ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle
not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers,
against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness
in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye
may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on
the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation
of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith
ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take
the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word
of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit,
and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
Let us therefore come boldly unto the
throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time
of need.
Heb 4:16
But thou, when thou prayest, enter
into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which
is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they
think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore
like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before
ye ask him.
Matt 6:6-8
And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day
and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will
avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he
find faith on the earth?
Luke 18:7-8
JESUS
LIFE OF PRAYER
And when he had sent the multitudes away,
he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come,
he was there alone.
Matt 14:23
And in the morning, rising up a great while
before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there
prayed.
Mark 1:35
And it came to pass in those days, that
he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer
to God.
Luke 6:12
And he went a little further, and fell
on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this
cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
Matt 26:39
The
Bible Says...
Again I say unto you, That if two of you
shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall
be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
Matt 18:19
Confess your faults one to another, and
pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer
of a righteous man availeth much.
James 5:16
If my people, which are called by my name,
shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their
wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin,
and will heal their land.
2 Chr 7:14
The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination
to the Lord: but the prayer of the upright is his delight. The way of the
wicked is an abomination unto the Lord: but he loveth him that followeth
after righteousness.
Prov 15:8-9
Seek ye the Lord while he may be found,
call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and
the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and
he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
Isa 55:6-12
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and
ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that
asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh
it shall be opened.
Matt 7:7-8
Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily
I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this
which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain,
Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. And all
things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.
Matt 21:21-22
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities:
for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself
maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And
he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because
he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And
we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to
them who are the called according to his purpose.
Rom 8:26-28
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne
of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Heb 4: 16
Now we know that God heareth not sinners:
but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
John 9:31
Reverence
For His Spoken Name
"His Name Is to Be Revered. --Reverence
should be shown also for the name of God. Never should that name be spoken
lightly or thoughtlessly. Even in prayer its frequent or needless repetition
should be avoided. "Holy and reverend is his name." Psalm 111:9. Angels,
as they speak it, veil their faces. With what reverence should we, who
are fallen and sinful, take it upon our lips!"

Proper
Attitude in Prayer
"We hope that our brethren will not manifest
less reverence and awe as they approach the only true and living God than
the heathen manifest for their idol deities, or these people will be our
judges in the day of final decision. I would speak to all who occupy the
place of teachers in our schools. Men and women, do not dishonor God by
your irreverence and pomposity. Do not stand up in your Pharisaism and
offer your prayers to God. Mistrust your own strength. Depend not in it;
but often bow down on your knees before God, and worship Him.
". . . One who has been educated for about
five years in Battle Creek was asked to lead in prayer before Sister White
should speak to the people. But as I beheld him standing upright upon his
feet while his lips were about to open in prayer to God, my soul was stirred
within me to give him an open rebuke. Calling him by name, I said, "Get
down upon your knees." This is the proper position always.
"To bow down when in prayer to God is the
proper attitude to occupy. This act of worship was required of the three
Hebrew captives in Babylon. . . . But such an act was homage to be rendered
to God alone--the Sovereign of the world, the Ruler of the universe; and
these three Hebrews refused to give such honor to any idol even though
composed of pure gold. In doing so, they would, to all intents and purposes,
be bowing to the king of Babylon. Refusing to do as the king had commanded,
they suffered the penalty, and were cast into the burning fiery furnace.
But Christ came in person and walked with them through the fire, and they
received no harm.
"Both in public
and private worship it is our duty to bow down upon our knees before God
when we offer our petitions to Him. This act shows our dependence upon
God.
"'And he spake this parable unto certain
which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other
a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank
thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers,
or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all
that I possess' (Luke 18:9-12). Mark you, it was the self-righteous Pharisee
who was not in a position of humility and reverence before God; but standing
in his haughty self-sufficiency, he told the Lord all his good deeds. 'The
Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself' (Luke 18: 11); and his prayer
reached no higher than himself."

And the publican, standing afar off, would
not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast,
saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down
to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth
himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Luke 18:13-14
On Sabbath, I spoke to the church in Chaux-de
Fonds about one hour. The Spirit of the Lord was in our midst. The only
hall the church could obtain in which to hold meetings, was like a private
room. And if the windows were opened to obtain air, the atmosphere was
loaded with the fumes of liquor casks and wine barrels; for directly across
the narrow street was a manufactory of liquors. And the noise of hammering
and pounding and clatter would not permit one to hear. The room was so
packed that it was impossible to kneel down, so all stood while prayer
was offered.

"Pray
Without Ceasing"
A precious lesson is this for all Christians.
Whenever we are brought into positions of difficulty or danger, even when
surrounded by those who love and fear not God, the heart may send up its
cry for help, and there is One who has promised that he will come to our
aid. This is the kind of prayer that Christ meant when he said, "Pray without
ceasing." We are not to make ejaculatory prayer a substitute for public
or family worship, or for secret devotion; but it is a blessed resource,
at our command under circumstances when other forms of prayer may be impossible.
Toilers in the busy marts of trade, crowded and almost overwhelmed with
financial perplexities, travelers by sea and land, when threatened by some
great danger, can thus commit themselves to divine guidance and protection.
And in every circumstance and condition of life, the soul weighed down
with grief or care, or assailed by temptation, may thus find comfort, support,
and succor in the unfailing love and power of a covenant- keeping God.
